2015 Ford Expedition/Expedition EL
Base-price range: $44,585 – $64,835
Model-year 2015 marks the first major update to
Ford’s line of large SUVs since 2007. The biggest changes include freshened styling and a new engine. Returning are the Expedition and extended Expedition EL, which has a wheelbase 12 inches longer than standard. All models seat up to eight passengers. They forego a V-8 engine for 2015, instead adopting a 365-horsepower 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6. It pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission and still provides up to 9,200 pounds of towing capacity. EPA estimated fuel-economy ratings of 16-18 mpg city/highway combined are good for a large SUV, but they don’t surpass the similar-size, V-8-powered
Chevrolet Tahoe. Expedition bests
Tahoe in terms of ride quality and driving dynamics thanks to its independent rear suspension (Tahoe uses a solid rear axle). Expedition and the EL also offer more total cargo capacity and have a more comfortable, easier to access third-row seat. While the cabin is quite comfortable, the interior’s look and feel is still a bit dated. The MyFord Touch infotainment system will either draw praise or ire, depending on whether or not you encounter any functionality glitches. For buyers who want or need a big SUV that offers the most passenger and cargo room, along with a solid driving experience, though, the
Ford Expedition and Expedition EL are tough to beat.
