2. Volkswagen e-Golf: No golf cart
Base price range: $29,815 – $36,415
Fuel economy rating: 116 MPGe

A new challenger approaches the Ford Focus Electric for battery-powered driving fun at a reasonable price.

The new 2016 Volkswagen e-Golf basically gives you GTI-like reflexes but without the need to buy gasoline or waiting for the company to sort out the emissions issues with its diesel-powered models. Despite having less horsepower than the Focus Electric (115), this VW feels just as spry. It also does slightly better in the range department, checking in at 83 miles. Unfortunately, the e-Golf is one of the few vehicles on this list to only be available for sale in California-emissions states and Washington, DC. We hope this hot electric hatch does well in those markets so the powers that be at VW headquarters will expand sales nationwide.
