Gas stop: The 11 Best Mileage Cars for 2016

7. Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid: Home on the range
Base price range: $35,435 – $39,435
Fuel economy rating: 99 MPGe; 40 MPG

Though it will sold initially only in California-emission states, the new 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid is worthy of mention on this list for being the newest competitor in the growing segment of plug-in hybrid midsize sedans.

This is South Korea’s answer to the Honda Accord Plug-in, Toyota Prius Plug-in, and Ford Fusion Energi. The plug-in Sonata bests its rivals for range, boasting 27 miles of pure electric driving (versus 13, 11, and 20, respectively) and 600 miles total when paired with its 2.0-liter gasoline engine (versus 570, 540, and 550, respectively). Combined output from the Sonata’s gas/electric drivetrain is a healthy 202 horsepower, giving this sedan surprising scoot in any driving situation. Combine this sophisticated drivetrain with a suite of safety and connectivity features, along with Hyundai’s excellent warranty coverage, and you have a vehicle that’s poised to be a success in this burgeoning category. Hopefully it will be enough of one to convince the bean counters to expand availability.
